MUSEUM WANTS £4,000

REQUEST TO CITY OUTSIDE BODIES SHOULD CONTRIBUTE ‘‘Let some of the local bodies that have so much to say back up their saying with a little cash, and put up the extra £2,000 for the museum," • said Or. J. A. C. Allum to the City Council last evening. The Auckland Institute and Museum advised that it was asking the council next year for £4,000, but it was appealing to the outside local bodies for donations, and these would be deducted from the city’s amount. “Do not let us hold out any hope that the city is going to find £4,000. They should understand that they have very little chance of getting more than £2,000 from the city,” said Cr. Allum. "The other local bodies say we are tail wagging the dog. Let them show their importance by immediately meeting the extra £2,000,” he remarked. Other councillors agreed that the museum was an institution that should be supported by all the local bodies within at least 10'miles. Cr. E. J. Phelan, a member of the Museum Board, said the £4,000 was the very least that the institution could be run on this year. The removal expenses had to be met. About £1,500 was a non-recurring expense. The whole question was referred to the Finance Committee for a report.
