IN THE MARKET PLACE
BETTER PRICES FOR PEARS SYDNEY GRAPES ARRIVE Trade in the City Marts remains ! fairly steady, quotations registering | little alteration. rpHE first consignment of Sydney grapes L for the current season came to hand ! on the Sydney boat this week, and realised 12s to 15s a barrel. Oranges from the same quarter brought 12s to 16s a case. Heavy arrivals of tomatoes continue to keep the market at unprofitable levels for the grower. A slight firming tendency was registered at to-day’s sales.. Better prices are being obtained for pears, good quality sort selling freely. Good dessert apples meet with a steady demand, though inferior grades are a drug on the market. Good firm bananas meet with a ready sale. A fresh shipment is due on the Fiji boat on Monday. Hothouse grapes are meeting with a slightly better sale. Te Kauwhata grapes also register a rising tendency and within the next fortnight should be practically off the market for the season. Lemons are in rather short supply, and stocks are being supplemented by Californian consignments. In the field and garden produce section little movement of note has taken place. The greater part of the offering of green vegetables is still being drawn from the Wellington Province. Heavy supplies of kumeras and pumpkins are coming forward.
