SCANDAL ABOUT RECTOR
VILLAGERS EXCITED COURTED SCHOOLMISTRESS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) ; (Australian Press Association) LONDON, Wednesday. The residents . of the village of Avening, Gloucestershire, are excited about the opening ot a commission of inquiry appointed by the Bishop of Gloucester, Dr. A. C. Headlam, to investigate allegations as to the conduct of the rector, the Rev. Oswald E. Hayden. It is alleged that he paid court to the village schoolmistress in circumstances which occasioned a scandal. The rector is alleged to have frequented alehouses in the village and to have told improper stories. It is also said that he habitually swore. Counsel, in outlining the complaints, said that, having regard to the rector’s own reputation and the fact that he was a married man, apart from being a clergyman, the commission would have to ask whether he had acted wisely and honourably. Mr. Hayden denies the charges. He says the gossip must be fully investigated for the sake of his wife, the young woman concerned and himself.
The Rev. Oswald E. Hayden was formerly minor Canon and Sacrist and headmaster of King’s School, Gloucester. He is in his 56th year. He was married in 1900 to Miss Edith Mary Payton, of Solihull, Warwickshire, and they have two sons and one daughter.
