FIRE-FIGHTING BILL
WHO PAYS HARBOUR BOARD? USE OF THE FIREFLOAT Who pays for the services of the Firefloat, which was of great assistance to the Fire Brigade in the recent oil fire at Freeman’s Bay? The question, which does not seem likely _to be answered, is not worrying the Harbour Board overmuch. “Even if we don’t get payment for the services, we are satisfied that the right thing was done,” said the actingchairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, yesterday. HA said that the expense amounted to about £IOO. The secretary of the Fire Board had written stating that the Board did not admit any liability for the hire of the firefloat. The board itself made no charge for attending fires in the city, and had no means of collecting the cost from the owners or occupiers of the building. The question was referred to the board-in-committee.
