RUGBY REFEREES
ANNUAL CONFERENCE AT NELSON APPOINTMENTS FOR BIG GAMES Press Association. NELSON, To-day. The annual conference of the New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association is being held in Nelson during the whole of the Easter holidays. Mr. Dan McKenzie, in the course of his presidential address, said there was no business of startling importance to be brought before the conference. The rules had been carefully considered, and as a result several recommendations would be made to the New Zealand Rugby Union. On Saturday the delegates were given a reception by the MayoV* The annual report stated that the executive felt that all eligible capable referees should be given an equal opportunity of controlling big fixtures. This could only be done by the Appointment Board of the New Zealand Rugby Union, not by appointments from lists forwarded by different Rugby unions and referees’ associations. The next conference will be held at Palmerston North. A motion to remove the headquarters from Wellington and make it moveable was lost by two votes.
The election of officers resulted: President Mr. D. McKenzie; executive, Messrs. T. A. Fletcher, J. H. Francis, L. Sievers, G. Bradley, A. M. Sims and H. J. McKenzie. The position of honorary secretary and treasurer was left to the executive to fill, Mr. Sievers, who has occupied the position for the past 15 years, declining nomination. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his services to the association.
