NEW LAW PRESIDENT
MR. F. L. G. WEST RETURNS N.Z.’S YOUTHFUL JUDGES “Things appear to be booming in Sydney. They talk of a slump, but so far there does not appear to be any indication of it.” Mr. F. L. G. West, the new president of the Auckland Law Society, who returned to Auckland by the Maunganui, went to Australia three months ago in search of health. On arrival in Auckland to-day he found himself fit and well, and, in his absence, elected
official head of the legal profession in Auckland. While in Sydney Mr. West witnessed a sitting of the High Court of Australia, and he also had the privilege of meeting several of the Australian judges, as well as leaders of the Bar, in New South Wales. Mr. West has also returned to find Mr. Douglas Smith, of Wellington, an old colleague of Varsity days, appointed to the Bench, and holding the distinction of being New Zealand’s youngest judge. “Our judges seem to be getting younger and younger,” was Mr. West’s comment. “I feel certain that Mr. Justice Smith will be an excellent judge. He was always very seriously inclined, as well as being an exceedingly able lawyer.”
