“THEIR SACRED DUTY”

DEATH BEFORE COWARDICE GHURKA REGIMENTS Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood, Commander-in-Chief in India, unveiling at Gorkhpur the war memorial of the Gurkha Rifles, said: “This memorial is a tribute to your work as our allies. No people was ever more staunchly served by its allies than the British by the Gurkhas. Your comrades laid upon you the sacred duty of continuing their grand tradition.

“World peace has not yet dawned. The last war has yet to be fought. When and where the next war will be fought none can tell, but this I can confidently say—it will find the Gurkhas ready to take up arms again as our allies and to do battle for right, true as ever to your old saying, ‘lt is better to die than be a coward.’ ”
