DEER SEASON OPENS
THREE GOOD HEADS (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., To-day. Although the deer-shooting season opened a week earlier this year than usual, there lias been little activity among sportsmen in this district as yet. A Palmerston North party, who had gone in pursuit of game in tne ranges near the headquarters of the district’s electrical supply at Arapeti, brought back two good heads—one being a 10pointer and the other an 11-pointer. A member of the party stated that comparatively few tracks had been found whereas the district had previously furnished good hunting, the warm weather having apparently delayed the roaring of the stags, although, on the other hand, the deer may have moved into the high country further back in the ranges or been forced down to the lower levels in search ot water. Another kill during the week-end was reported from where one of the finest heads of the Sambur or swamp deer that has been mounted in this district was secured, it being a six-pointer—one of the iincst of its class obtainable, for they seldom go over six points.
