Hawera's Trots
SPLENDID FIELDS ENGAGED
North and South Clash
THE II aw era Trotting Club will stage another of its splendid functions during the Easter session and the sport to be provided on Saturday and Monday promises to be of a high standard. Quality, from both Islands, is well represented and the racing will be of a most spectacular nature, and the fields are conducive to keen siieculation.
\ S a country fixture the Easter meeting of the Hawera Trotting Club is not only one of the most popular, but ranks as one of the best conducted in the Dominion. In fact, metropolitan functions have nothing on tho Hawera organisation and, generally speaking, it provides trotting fans with a class of sport that is unsurpassed in any of the centres. The presence of so many horses from Auckland province lends additional interest to the carnival as far as light-harness enthusiasts in this part of the Dominion are concerned, and it is generally anticipated that a. fair proportion of the “Easter eggs” to be distributed by the Hawera Club will find their way North. The South Island is also strongly represented, and horses from that area will play a prominent part in the proceedings. The clash between the Southerners and Northerners should be worth going a long way to witness. The first bird cage parade will be mad© by the contestants for the AUROA HANDICAP Of £200; Vj miles; 3.42 limit.
Twenty-five figure in this heat, with 16 off the end, and the public will probably look for something that will begin quickly and avoid any likelihood of trouble. Muriel Thorpe is a smart one out of the slips, and so is Great Eyre, who will be bracketed with Nelson Dillon, and J. T. Paul’s pair will take a lot of beating. Single Mint may be ready now, but on recent form Great Ballin would appear a better proposition, and Beverley Audubon is a promising sort. Musical is improving, and cannot be long without reaching a prize, and two promising novices in Lord Lu and Trustworthy will be seen in action. If the latter is as good as report states, she will be there when the numbers go up. Ce Advanceur is nicely placed and bound to trouble those in the front. Lena' Chimes went a good mile at Wanganui, and Bell Dial is not to be ignored. Public opinion may lean toward PAUL’S BRACKET, GREAT BALLIN, CE ADVANCEUR. The unhoppled brigade will have their trot in the next event, the MATAP’U HANDICAP Of £200; li miles; 3.48 limit.
Although the field is not large there is material to give backers a solid problem to solve. Mokanna is a recent winner, and Colonel Thorpe gave such an improved exhibition at Wanganui that he must be taken seriously, and Nelson’s Request will be improved by his recent outings. Etta Cole was not seen to the best advantage at Thames, and should do better in the present company. Rebecca only requires to go solid to make the race full of interest, and Call Boy was knocking hard in his essays last week. Ben Bingen is a possibility, and the form of Lady Ena at Wanganui will make her prospects appear quite rosy. Real Todd has a good string of placed performances to his credit this season, and is due to break it for a higher certificate. Brian Bingen went so well at Ashhurst that lie may upset the calculations of the others again. The machine order may be ETTA COLE, MOKANNA, LADY ENA. There is every reason to anticipate a stubborn contest when the field is dispatched for th

Warplane narrowly defeated Nelson Dillon at Thames, having the luck of the running, bjit Derby Lynn, on his effort last Saturday, looks like holding the pair safe, and Mona Bogan has attractive performances. Sailor Bov, Queen Elizabeth, Sylvia Bogan, Signor and Our Nancy have all recent form to recommend them, and there should be something doing when they meet. Thorpie is a likely customer, and Heroic is a good sort on a handy mark. Hal Huon won in such a fashion at Wanganui as to suggest another victory shortly. Bady Brent is a useful pacer and sure to be a nuisance if started in this heat. Master Cute is coming back to form and will attract attention. Bottie Advance raced prominently last week, and Audubon Child only requires to be right to keep all hands busy. Favouritism may incline toward HAL HUON, DERBY LYNN, LADY BRENT. , . Interest will now become centred m the chief Item on the card, the richly endowed __ . HAWERA CLP
One of the strongest fields yet known at Hawera will face the starter in this heat. Its numerical strength is also unusual. Of the eight appearing on the front, Bady Barrington, Tui Wildwood, Kevinbrae, and Pageant have been in the limelight recently, and their form gives rise to the opinion that those behind them will be set a stiff task to head them off. Then there is Royal Serene, who hails from the powerful Hooper stable, Dillon Huon, who is improving in stamina, and Peter Grattan. If the latter went right he would be capable of upsetting calculations, but if beginning incorrectly might upset some of the others. Of the limit lot, Tul Wildwood looks to hold the best credentials. Reremai will run a good race, but looks to be held safe by Shadowland, who won the Manawatu Cup in good style. \ an Cap has pace but is too uncertain, and Tomkinson's pacer should settle him too. In the next row Great Peter and Yegu-
vius appeal most, anu both promise to play a prominent part in the final issue. The latter gave the Manawatu Cup winner a big fight, and Great Peter, although having no credentials at this distance, is a real horse that should prove capable of seeing it out to the bitter end. Of those further back Gold Dial and Gold Jacket look like doing best, and the public may vote for GREAT PETER, TUI WILDWOOD, TOMKINSON BRACKET. The excitement of the Cup contest abated, the onlookers will turn their attention to the selection of a favourite in the square-gaited MANAIA HANDICAP Of X 230; 2 miles; 4.53 limit. yds bhd Louisiana . .72 The Tiger ... 24 Bright Light .72 Kilmar .... 36 Brigand .... 84 Bingen Starr . . 36 Anseline . . .84 Roma Bingen . 60 Maxegin .... 34 Although only nine are carded for the event, it will furnish one of the best betting heats on the day’s card, as practically every one of the contestants has a winning chance. The Tiger demonstrated in his outing at Wanganui on Saturday that he is O.K. again, and although he had nothing to beat, the free and easy manner in which ho did his work won him a host of admirers for his next outing. Kolmar and Bingen Starr can both go fast, but are not always reliable, and Roma Bingen, who has become solid, will appeal more to speculators. Louisiana was trotting in good style at Wanganui among the pacers, and will have something to say in this argument. Bright Light is an improved trotter, and if those in front make any mistakes, he will take full advantage of it. Brigand was paced last week but did not get a chance to show his prowess. The imported horse Maxegin will be making his first appearance on New Zealand soil. If he is the real goods, then he must be in the picture. Anseline will plod along and may be quite handy at the box. Favourites will probably be found in THE TIGER, ROMA BINGEN, BRIGHT LIGHT. One of the popular events on the schedule will next come up for decision, this being the NORMANBY HANDICAP Of £200; 1 mile (saddle); 2.22 limit.
There is a fine field of -weight carriers engaged here, and with a short limit a great race should be witnessed. Three smart ones are on the front, and Cora Tacks may prove the pick of the trio, but just behind is Silver Link, Beatty, Lady Brent, Joy Bird, Profiteer and Great Kevin, all partial to the saddle business. Beatty lias been threatening to win a race since the season opened, and has filled several minor places in harness heats, but she may do better in saddle. Lady Brent has won recently at this style, and Silver Link, despite his failure at Thames, should do better, being nearer the front. Master Cute is a big possibility, and Direct Todd and Abrudbanya were both winners last week-end. The latter won a saddle race in a jog and went pretty fast. Direct Todd cun go well with weight on top, but may prefer to wait for the harness heat. High Sea is in winning vein, and he can scamper over a mile with the saddle up. If he hops out smartly the rest will have a headache before the post is reached. Van Cap may elect to go right this way, and Our Patch is no sluggard in saddle. When the machine is adjusted the order may bo HIGH SEA, SILVER LINK, CORA TACKS. Those who are not quite up to cup form over two miles will parade for the PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of £230; 2 miles; 4.50 limit.
Speed King . , 12 Fourteen fair-class pacers are carded for this contest, and some likely candidates are on the limit. One of these, Bell Dial, won at a mile and a half last week at Wanganui, and she looked like staying on. Nellie ' Parson ran the Wellsford mare close and the pair may light out another hard battle. Hostess will have a lot of friends, and Great Delight gave a display at Wanganui that promises better results. Heroic is nicely placed and will no doubt prove the best of those on the second line. Tumatakuru is a very promising novice, and although he has only a win at Nelson to his credit, performed in a pleasing manner. He comes from the Oakhampton stable —a fairly' - kolid recommendation. Of those further back, Lottie Advance and Kevinbrae have the best credentials over this distance, and their efforts last week-end, if repeated, will give the pair a great chance of securing some of the prize money. Public opinion would lean toward Kevinbrae if reserved for the event, but if absent BELL DIAL, TUMATAKUU and NELLIE PARSON will share the honours. The first day’s programme will reach finality with the ELTHAM HANDICAP Of £250; miles; 2.54 limit.
This will be one of the gems of the day, and should attract a big pool on : the machine. Direct Todd, Royal • Serene and High Sea are on the end, i and the former, in view of his week- ■ end success, may command most re- ■ spect. Reremai was unlucky at [ Thames, and the mare should be all r the better for the racing there. Pag- > earnt can go a merry ten furlongs, and i the distance will suit Dillon Huon adi mirably. Our Patch has been racing > consistently, and the same applies to , Admiral Lock, who, despite his defeat i in the final event at Wanganui, will i make things interesting in this go. 5 Gold Dial is nicely placed, but may not ■ begin quick enough for such a field. 5 Tamerlane, the trotter, only wants to i move off with the pacers and they will - know they have been to the races. 1 Vesuvius can unravel a great burst of r speed at this journey. Taipare is a j solid customer and should add interest s to the race that will take some sort- - ing out. The public selection mav i be'ADMIRAL LOCK, DILLON HUON, - REREMAI.
