RISE FROM MESSAGE BOY The change In the administrative control of the telegraphic branch of the Post and Telegraph Department at Auckland, which caused the abolition of two of the highest positions on that side, has coincided with the retirement of two high officials -who have risen from message boys to the status of branch heads. Mr. J. M. Williams, who retired from the superintendent’s chair on Saturday,. was at first a message boy, and Mr. G. W. A. Clark, who has retired from the position of senior supervisor, commenced in a similar capacity. Mr. Clark has spent 39 years in the service of the department. Twentytwo years of that period were occupied in operating, and later supervising in Wellington, and in 1923, Mr. Clark was transferred to Hamilton, where he had ! been for only five months when he was j again promoted and sent to Auckland. • He has enjoyed the respect and esteem jof his colleagues in the service. On ! the social side he has been a keen supporter of cricket and football, and j many inter-department games have ! had their origin in the spirit of sportsj manship which he has displayed. With 1 the abolition of his position at Auckland. Mr. Clark was to have been transferred to another office, but he was so firmly established in Auckland that he decided to retire now.
