A.R.A. CHAMPIONSHIPS ROW-OVER IN SENIOR FOURS
SINGLE SCULLS TO DAVIES
Championship titles at stake in the events held over from Rangiriri were rowed for by the Auckland Rowing Association on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal, but interest flagged at times through the tardiness of crews in getting to the marks, and through the non-appearance of St. George's in the senior fours. Hargreaves and Simons (St. George’s) put up a fine double-sculling performance, winning the maiden and junior titles in successive races. Results: ! The starters wue Messrs. Walter Mud- | den and G. Waitemata, after resisting a challenge by Auckland, won by 1£ lengths. Handicap Single-sculls.—E>. Davies i Vorth Shorp) SOT..
(North Shore). scr., ] : W. Woolhouse (St. George’s). 555, 2; W. Lowe (Waitemata), 255. 3. Davies almost fouled a yacht, but made a good recovery, and won comfortably. Senior Fours.—St. George's failed to boat a crew, and Waitemata won on a row-over. The crew was: T. Johnson (str.), L. Brooker, N. Doubleday, A. M. Mackay, G. Crawford (str).
Maiden Double-sculls’.—St. George’*? (V. Hargreaves and M. Simons) won very easily. Junior Doubles.—St. George's (A”. Hargreaves and M. Symons), 1: Waitemata (C. G. Fearon and J. M. Stevenson), 2. Only starters. St. George’s won by a length and ahalf after a good race in the early stages.
WEST END “AT HOME”
FELTON WINS FOURS There Was a large attendance at the West End Club’s* “At Home’ ’on Saturday. Tea was served in the boathouse, and the visitors danced to music supplied by an excellent band. For tire rowing events Mr. J. Dawes was starter and Captain H. H. Sergeant judge. The chief event of the afternoon was the president's fours for which four crews entered. W. Bloxham (str.), A. Worden, R. Macey, C. . Parven. O. Fulton (str.), G. Conway, F. Conway. L. McDonald. J. Skinner (str.), S. Dowling, J. Stratton. P. SouffoL J. Haylock (str.), W. McFarlane, E. Tuck, M. Taylor. First Heat: Fulton beat Bloxham by a length. Second Heat: Skinner beat Haylock by three-quarters of a length. Final: Felton beat Skinner by half a length. This was a fairly even race, Felton having slightly the better of the going all the way. Skinner challenged in the last 100 yards, but Felton staved him off. Coxswains* Race. —G. Dowling, M. McCarthy, A. McDonald, M. Conway, L. McDonald (cox), beat F. Orrell, D. McDonald, J. Stowe. I. Matthews. J. Stratton (cox), by half a length. The course was from the red house to the boathouse. Veterans, v. Coxswains.—This race was rowed over the short course, the veterans conceding the coxswains a length’s start. The race ended in the veterans' favour by one length. The crews were: Veterans: B. Culpan, W. Conway, W. McCready, Log&n. Coxswains: G. Dowling. H. McDonald, V. Foley, M. McCarthy. 75Yds Swimming Race.—Webster, 1; Macey, 2. There were seven starters.
EIGHT-OARED CHAMPIONSHIPS
CONTESTS AT WELLINGTON WELLINGTON, To-day. Jn the inter-club eight-oared championship on Saturday, Star No. 2 won the first heat from Wellington, and Star No. 1 won the second heat from Petone. In the final Star No. 1 beat Star No. 2 by a canvas. In the welter-weight race Petone beat Star to the post in the final.
