CANARY NOTES

During the week Mr. H. D. Mace, Hastings, * the noted Norwich, Plain head fancier, visited Auckland and during his brief stay visited most of the leading canary fanciers in town He was greatly impressed with the Yorkshire canaries, but was disappointed at not seeing more good plainheads. Mr. Mace had just returned from Christchurch, where he had been attending the Combined Young Bird Show, held there under the auspices of the New Zealand Utility Club. Mr. Mace took 15 birds with him and. judging from the remarkable run of successes attained by his birds, he has evidently some of the finest stock in the Dominion. His wins with only 15 birds were as follow: Six firsts, four seconds, two thirds, South Island unflighted championship, Club Cup for best canary in show, Candy Canary Cup, Peace Shield for most points in show, special best Norwich opposite colour to cup winner, special best buff clear Norwich in show —quite a good day’s outing! One of Mr- Mace’s birds was claimed at catalogue price and he also booked several good orders, so that his trip South was both enjoyable and profitable.

PERSONAL NOTES

Mr. Geo. H. Ambler has been appointed judge of all fancy classes of poultry and duck, and Mr. W. A. Hanson judge of the utility classes of poultry at the Manawatu Show, held in conjunction with the Manawatu A. and P. Association at Palmerston North,'June 20, 21 and 22. Mr. A. Fitchett, Waiuku, who is a most enthusiastic breeder of White Leghorns, has had a remarkably good season, with the result he has several exceptionally promising birds, both cockerels and pullets. Waiuku breeders hold a strong hand in exhibition utility White Leghorns. Mr. Fitchett is a prominent member of the executive of the Waiuku Poultry Society. During the week I had a visit from two enthusiastic lady poultry-keepers —Miss Fergusson and Miss Kidner (Wanganui)—who have a fine lot of Black Orpingtons. They have also fallen victims to the charms of the light Sussex and have recently imported a good breeding pen from England and have also another pen on the way. We have repeatedly written of the prospects of poultry-keeping for women and, judging from the enthusiasm of Misses Fergusson and Kidner, their success is assured. Not only have they erected their own pen, but have built their own poultry houses, which are quite up-to-date and fitted with the latest labour-saving devices. During their stay in Auckland they visited the yards of Mr. Kissling, Mangere, and Mr. Smith, Morningside. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT A.Z.8., Point Chevalier: The idea of yours is an excellent one, with the exception of the depth, which would have been better had it been 14 or 16 feet. Regarding the sex-linked birds. By this method you are able to distinguish male and female as they are hatched, thus doing away with the need of keeping cockerels for four weeks before being able to distinguish the difference. There are, of course, only certain crosses which will give you the link.
