OLD WALTZ RETURNS

GRACEFUL DANCE FOR GRACEFUL GOWNS Dances are like dresses—they must be moulded to the day and the dancer. Picture the flashing-eyed Spanish senorita, subtly, graceful iin her long lace skirts and mantilla, jerking through the Charleston—or the fairylike Pavlova, like a piece of thistledown, “doing the Blackbottom! ” No, each dance must ha ire its own dress—and dresses must have their own dances. And so—the graceful, old-fashioned waltz, slowly but surely, is creeping back with this year’s return to longer, graceful frocks.

Charleston and Blackbottom belong to the days of Eton crops and above-the-knee dresses, and as “Miss 1928” dons her new dance frock of soft lace and taffeta, of graceful drapings and billowy tulles, she slips back, almost unconsciously, into some of the graces of other days. She longs to “act the part,” in her dainty old-world frock- — for a while she pictures herself the girl of other days. She is captivated, though she may not know it, in the spell of romance of those days. Soft lace and billowy skirts cast their spell and recall the graceful, swaying, crinolined figures of old —and twinkling feet forsake the jazz waltz and slip into the swaying whirl of the old-fashioned dance. * * * Waltz music everywhere is popular: three of the latest favourites are Charmaine, the Russian Lullaby, and C’est Vous, and every ballroom has its oldwaltz devotees.
