CHURCHES TO DISCUSS BROADCASTING SYSTEM

CONFERENCE AT IYA A conference of representatives of the various religious bodies, convened by the Radio Broadcasting Company, is being held in the studio of Station IYA this afternoon. Invitations have been sent to all denominations. It is proposed to form a Church Broadcasting Advisory Committee similar to the one in Christchurch, consisting of a representative of each church, and of the Broadcasting Company. Each denomination has its date fixed in strict rotation, and it is left to the church to decide from which building the service shall be relayed. All alterations to the time-table such as to permit the broadcast of a special service must be arranged through the committee, which also receives applications for week-night broadcasts, organ recitals, missions, and similar events. It is proposed that the church beingbroadcast should arrange for the children’s service the same evening. This scheme has been working very well in Christchurch, and should be a success in Auckland. A similar conference is to be held about the end of April to consider the formation of a musical and dramatic committee. It is thought the local musical societies will avail themselves of this opportunity to co-operate with the company, on the principle that radio must eventually become the most direct, popular, and efficient means of providing public entertainment. The societies are being allowed to use broadcasting to develop a taste for good music. Similar conferences are to be called in the other centres. Invitations have been sent to the following societies: Auckland Lyceum Club. Bohemian Orchestra, Royal Auckland Choir, Glee Club, Repertory Society, Choral Society, Aeolian Orchestra, Gramophone Society, Society of Musicians, Savage Club, Orphans’ Club, Amateur Operatic Society, Phiilistines’ Club, Athenian Club, and Madame Irene Ainsley’s Operatic Society.
