POTATO MARKET EASIER WHEAT VALUES STEADY Sun Office, Friday, 9 a.m. The potato market has eased considerably on the spot over the week, belated I March shipments all coming to hand together. Two Southern vessels unload at the wharf to-day, while another is due in Auckland on Monday next. Quotations ranging up to £l3 through store for the best quality Southern tubers little over a week ago have been reduced to see bookings for to-day’s arrivals ranging from £9 10s to £lO. From now on regular shipments can be expected from the South, with the prospects of even lower values in the future. The Southern market declined 5s a ton over the week. The market for onions has also weakened in the South, present quotations being 10s a ton below last week's Auckland merchants are mostly neglecting the Pukekohe onions in favour of the Southern product owing to the lower values ruling in that quarter. Limited inquiries for April shipment to Vancouver might have a tendency to relieve the Southern market, though as the onions would nave to be transhipped at Auckland, there is not much prospect of any great volume of business. Quotations through store Auckland at the moment range up to 11s a cwt, with holders of best quality local onions asking up to Is a cwt more. The oat market remains firm with Southern sellers asking 3s 9d for A grade. Through store, Auckland. A Gartons are quoted at 4s lid, with B's at 4s 7d. A continuance of the demand from overseas would probably see a further advance. 4 , . .. Values for wheat remain steady m the South with sellers asking 5s 9d. Little forward buying is reported, however, most traders preferring to deal from hand to mouth. Spot quotations through store remain steady at 7s 6d. Steady trading is reported in chaff with values unchanged. A shipment of Blenheim chaff came to hand on the Kurow to-day. . , . Little alteration has taken place in the •maize market over the week. limited arrivals are now coming to hand from the coast, but the demand with the continuance of the hot weather and uie low price for wheat is still weak. Sales have been made up to 6s Id on the wharf, but, generally, the market can be considered unchanged at around 6s with little business being transacted. . A fair amount of business is still beir.-, done in ■grass and clover seeds, though the rush has died down. A rather erratic demand can be expected to continue right through to the end of Apid. Indications point to higher prices ruling for linseed this year, with the new season’s quotations opening at up to £- ahead of last season’s opening rates Forward quotations for both Partridge and Blue Peas in the South are up to Is 6d a bushel below last season s rates. Heavv trading is reported in fertilisers, principally phosphates and basic sia 0 .
