PLAN THAT FAILED

STORY OF FORGED RECEIPT By altering a receipt, John Richard Stevens, aged 26, hoped to make himself richer. The plan failed. Stevens was charged at the Police Court to-day with attempting to steal a bicycle valued at £l6 10s. Chief-Detective Hammond said that accused had obtained possession of the machine on the l ire-purchase system. He was given a receipt of 10s for two instalments; but altering the receipt he made it appeal- as one for £l6 10s. He then attempted to sell the machine, producing the receipt as proof that the bicycle was his own property. He was fined £5. in default one month’s imprisonment.
