TRAWLER DISMANTLED
KAHU FOR WHANCAROA The Sanford trawler Kahu has been dismantled and was towed from Auckland yesterday for Whangaroa, where she will T>e used as a store skip for Messrs. Sanford’s trawling fleet. At on© time the Kahu was owned by the Richardson Line and was engaged in the Hast Coast cargo trade. Owing to the smallness of her carrying' capacity she was replaced by the Awahou and transferred to the Well-ington-Chatham Island service. ' In October, 1919, the vessel was disabled at sea during stormy weather, 30 miles from the Chatham Islands. With difficulty the engine-rooA was pumped dry and steam was raised in the boiler. To save her from foundering, she was beached at Whangaroa, Chatham Islands. The 13 passengers and 13 members of the crew landed safely and were taken on a launch to Waitangi. Subsequently, the Kahu was salvaged and brought back to New Zealand. She is an iron vessel of 185 tons and was built at Shields in 18S6.
