SUNKEN TREASURE

SYDNEY EXPEDITION The steamer Maianbar has been chartered from the North Coast Steam Navigation Company for three months by a Sydney syndicate, which will endeavour to reclaim the silver ore and zinc slabs from the sunken Norwegian steamer Yarra, in Gizo Harbour, Solomon Islands, says the Sydney “Morning Herald.” The Maianbar will leave Sydney at the end of this week or at the beginning of next week with the salvage party and gear for Gizo. The Yarra, which was destroyed by fire, is lying in 20ft of water forward and 35ft aft. A member of the syndicate said that plans had been made to effect a complete salvage of the 1,500 tons of zinc slabs, and from 900 to 1,000 tons of silver ore. If possible, these consignments would be shipped direct to a Continental port: otherwise they would be brought to Sydney by a Burns, Philp steamer for transhipment.
