SYDNEY PUBLIC ROUSED
ASSAULTS ON CHILDREN MORE DRASTIC PUNISHMENT By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. SYDNEY, Monday. * The people of Sydney have been horrified in the past few days by. two gross assaults on children. In the first instance a girl of 10 years of age was on her way to school when she was dragged into some scrub. Her assailant threatened to wound her with a knife unless she accompanied him. There was such a public outcry about this case that the Government is now offering a reward of £SOO for information which leads to the apprehension of the assailant. The second case concerned a girl of 13, who was living in a distant suburb. She was the victim of a similar attempted outrage, but her screams attracted assistance. A youth was subsequently arrested. These two similar crimes in succession have aroused a public outcry, and a demand for more drastic punishment for this class of offence, which since the abolition of capital punishment has been very prevalent.—A. and N.Z.
