ROAD TO OREWA

METALLING COMPLETED

Residents of Orewa, where the Wonderful two-mile beach of the name, is situated, may now celebrate the ending of their isolation; for the new main highway North, which begins at Birkenhead and goes, via Albany and Silverdale, through Orewa, is now completely metalled, and Orewa is within an easy hour’s run of Devonport or Birkenhead in all weathers. Hitherto the clay roads have made good journeying for motors in good weather, but during wet periods their clay stretches became impassable, denying access to settlers and blocking the way of travellers. Orewa Beach — undoubtedly one of the finest stretches of sand in New Zealand, and providing safe bathing- in its surf even for childten—has proved a most popular weekend rendezvous. Many people in the past, however, were deterred from visiting this charming spot whenever rain threatened, on account of the uncertainty of the road holding for their safe return. That disability is fortunately ended.

It is an extraordinary thing that with two roads to Orewa, neither was completely metalled right through to provide permanent access. When the Main Highways Board decided on the route via Albany being the main highway North, however, it insisted that the patchwork policy must be discontinued, and that the remaining clay stretches on this road should be metalled.

Thus, for the first time, there is a reliable travelling surface all the waji to beautiful Orewa, and its beach must become increasingly popular.
