USE OF FERTILISERS
INCREASE IN WAIKATO GREATER PRODUCTION Unusual activity in the use of fertilisers throughout the Taranaki and Wanganui districts is reported by the locomotive super- f intendent of the New Zealand railways at Auckland, Mr. F. J. Mackley, who has just returned from an extensive trip through the • North Island. “TT'HE fertiliser is going on the Taranaki and Wanganui lauds by the cwt.,” he said this morning, “and it is evident that the farmers have availed themselves of the greater facilities for cheaper manures to increase the production of their land.” Mr. Mackley said that in all the years he had been travelling through these provinces he had not seen such enthusiasm ou the part of farmers to improve the quality of the soil and secure greater returns. He attributed this largely to the establishment of fertiliser works at both Smart Road (New Plymouth) and at Aramoho (Wanganui), and to the cheap rates at which this commodity was transported by the Railway Department over certain haulages. In addition to this heavy fertilising, Mr. Mackley reports a spirit of healthy optimism which has permeated the whole district, and which is leading the farmers to the belief that better prices and greater production will be their lot in the near future. “Judging from the quantities I saw going on to the land,” he said, “there will be a big improvement in the output in a couple of seasons.”
