ROYAL OAK DEATH-TRAP

SEDDON MONUMENT ROAD BOARD URGES REMOVAL “The Seddon Monument at Royal Oak is a death-trap and it should be removed to a less dangerous position,” sa-id Mr. W. C. Coldicutt. Mayor of Onehunga, when a letter from the Mount Roskill Traffic Board, embodying this suggestion, was read at last evening’s meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council. fT'HE board offered to pay half the cost of moving the statue to a safer position. More suitable sites could be found, continued the Mayor, either in Jellicoe Park, One Tree Hill Domain or Waikowhai Park. Councillor Speight: When this question cropped up about two years ago, two reliable engineers said that the cost of removal would amount to £250. It weighs 60 tons and could be trussed up and lifted bodily, but I doubt whether the concrete road would bear it. There is undoubtedly a tremendous traffic continually passing around it. A special committee consisting of the Mayor, Councillors Campling, Moor and Speight was appointed to discuss the question with the Mount Roskill Road Board.
