ODDFELLOWS’ NEW HALL
OFFICIAL OPENING INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP In the presence of a large number : of local and visiting Oddfellows a new hall for the Star of Avondale Lodge was opened in St. George’s Road, Avondale, on Saturday afternoon. Bro. A. Maxwell, N.G., presided and other participants in the opening ceremony were Bros. W. Potter, R. Grey, T. B. Clay, F. Newbold, G. H. Adams and Sisters Crookes and Newbold. It was mentioned that the Avondale Lodge was started about 25 years ago with a membership of 30. To-day it exceeded 200. The members had been meeting in a hall totally unsuited for the growing needs of the lodge, and the building of the new hall had been a very necessary move. Nearly everything, except the erection of the walls and roof, for which contracts had been let, had been done voluntarily by various brethren under the supervision of Mr. H. Clinton Sj - age, the honorary architect. During the opening ceremony a presentation of a gold-mounted fountain pen was made to Air. Savage and silver loving cups were presented to Bros. R. Groy and T. B. Clay. The new hall, which will accommodate about 200 people, is of brick, 65ft. long and 35ft. wide. There are anterooms on both sides of the entrance doors, and the main floor has been specially prepared for dancing. Adjoining the new hall and reached by a short porch is another building, constructed of iron, which will be used as a supper-room and kitchen.
