Two Drowned at Wellington
CARRIED OUT TO SEA ATTEMPTS AT RESCUE FAIL Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sunday. A double drowning accident occurred at Titahi Bay this afternoon, Miss Ellen Downey, aged 25, and Mr. Joseph Pope, aged 26, both of Wellington, losing their lives. Miss Downey and Mr. Pope went in for a bathe at the bay at about 2 o’clock, and had been in the water about 20 minutes when they got out of their depth. With another bather, Miss Skews, they were carried out toward the open sea. Mr. Pope tried to save Miss Downey and, in doing so, got into difficulties. Messrs. Thomas and Gifford Russell, George Ward and Wallace Thomson, went to the rescue, but were unable to save Miss Downey and Mr. Pope. One of the men caught Miss Downey, but she slipped from his grasp. Miss Skews was also in difficulties, but was brought to the shore. The rescuers, with an improvised life-line, dragged Mr. Pope’s body to the shore, where every effort to revive life was tried, but without success. Miss Downey was swept beyond the reach of the party and the body has not been recovered.
