OPENING OF NEW LINK PRIME MINISTER WILL NOT BE PRESENT It Is learned that the Prime Minister. the RiKht o 3 In. J. Cl. Coates, will not attend the opening of the new link in the East Coast Railway, which will be held at Tauranga at noon on Wednesday. When he was first asked to open the line. Mr. Coates notified the authorities at Tauranga that he would be able to attend only if the function were fixed for March 30. This did not suit those in charge of the arrangements, however, and the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, will be present to cut the ribbon, which will allow' the first official train over the new link, and which will signal the opening of the regular passenger and goods services.
The first passenger train to run on the new line conveyed a party of about 600 people to the Tauranga races on Saturday, leaving Frankton early in the morning and returning late the same evening. The Railway Department reports that everything on the trip was satisfactory, _
