WATER 12 FEET DEEP
TROUBLE ON AORANGI LEAK IN RUDDER GLAND Engineers on the Aorangi were faced with a difficult task on the voyage from Honolulu to Suva, when a leaking rudder-gland allowed water to find its way into the engine room. the head of the shaft tunnel the water was more than 12 feet deep, and endangered some of the ship’s auxiliary motors. The pumps were able to cope with the situation, however, and there -was never any danr*,r of the ship's running being affected in any way. The engineers dived under the water and endeavoured to pack the joints, but found the work difficult. An inspection was made by the Harbour Board diver yesterday and it was found necessary to make arrangements to dock the ship in Sydney, although it is hoped that this will not result in any alteration in the sailing schedule. It is possible that the rudder and auxiliary gear will have to be taken out to repair the leak, but as this would mean five days in dock an attempt will be made to remedy the defect. without doing so.
