HELP FOR HOSPITALS
HINT OF NEW TAX (From Our Own Correspondent.) HUNTLY, Friday. A hint that the Government may impose a new tax for hospital purposes was given by the Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, at Huntly to-day, when he was asked for a grant for metalling a part of the road between Rotowaro and Pukemiro Junction. It was stated that if this road was in good order, an ambulance van could take accident cases from Pukemiro to Huntly in half an hour. Mr. McLeod said there were many points at issue. The need of providing facilities for bringing injured men from the mines for hospital treatment was fully recognised, and was bound up largely in the question of rates. The method of rating at present in counties was based on surface v&lues and the hospital tax had become such a great burden that the Government was investigating the possibilities of imposing a tax on “output” for hospital purposes. The Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works, who was with Mr. McLeod, said he would inspect the road before coming to any decision.
