NEWCOMER’S CHANCE
HERBERT BRENON’S DECISION • TO LEAD WITH CHANEY Herbert Brenon, now directing for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who launched Betty Bronson to fame in “Peter Pan,” is about to guide the feet of another unknown along the path that leads to stardom. Brenori has selected Loretta Young, of some prominence in Los Angeles society,, but practically unknown to the screen world, to play the feminine lead in “Laugh, Clown. Laugh,” Lon Chaney’s starring vehicle for M.G.M. which Brenon will make on a particularly pretentious scale. Miss Young studied dancing under Ruth St. Denis, but has appeared in only one picture, “Naughty But Nice.” It will be remembered that it was “He Who Gets Slapped,” a production in which Lon Chaney appeared as a sad-hearted clown, that the talent and beauty of Norma Shearer first received full recognition and eventually led to her being selected for stellar honours. Who knows but that history will be repeated in the case of Miss Young, for it is a well-known fact in studio circles that Lon Chaney’s supporting artists, especially Jiis leading ladies, are invariably lucky after having been associated with him in the making of a picture. ,
