FINALS PLAYED The final of the women’s championships of the Papatoetoe Tennis Club was played yesterday afternoon, when Miss Doris Bryant, last year’s runnerup, defeated Miss Dot Weston, last year’s champion. The match went to three sets, the first being won by Miss Weston 7 —5, and was level-pegging all the way. The second set commenced in the same way, and at four all, it looked as though it would be a repetition of the first exhibition, but the next two games went to Miss Bryant, finishing up 6—4. In the third set, the steadiness of the older player swung the balance, and Miss Bryant claimed the set and match at 6 —l. The final of the president’s trophy was also played yesterday, when Miss Clara Bryant (owe 40) beat Miss Phyllis Weston (owe 30), 3—6, 6—4, 6—5. In this match the winner was not extended, till the second set, when she was leading s—l,5 —1, and easing off, allowed Miss Weston to reach five all. In the Smith Cup, Miss N. Mellsop (owe 30) 3 —6, beat Miss D. Weston (owe 40), 6—l, 6 —l, in the semi-final, and is waiting for the winner of Misses C. Bryant and Iv. Leonttrd to play the final game. In the women’s handicap doubles, Misses N. Mellsop and Iv. Leonard owe 15), 3 —6, beat Misses P. Weston and Iv. Waters (owe 15), 4—6, 6—3, 6—3. In the mixed doubles handicap competition J. Valentine and Miss M. Wilson are in the final, awaiting the result of the match between F. Catt and Miss D. Bryant (owe 40), and B. Brown and Miss N. Mellsop (owe 30), to finish off the competition.
