HELEN WILLS’S EYES

WHAT COLOUR ARE THEY? What colour are the eyes of Helen Wills? The question seems to be baffling tennis fans in America. The editor of “American Lawn Tennis” has been doing his best to find the solution. He, himself, is colour

blind, so he does not pose as an authority. Two or three of the champion’s sex were asked, and after more or less speculating they confessed failure. Then Mrs. Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman was thought of, as being a Californian and well acquainted with Miss Wills from the latter’s childhood. So an appealing note was sent to her, and with her usual good nature she ,sent this reply: “I am sure they are not blue or brown. There is a mixture of grey, green and brown—possibly ‘Hazel Eyes’ describes them. She would be glad to describe them I am sure. Sorry not to be definite on the subject.” Some progress was thus made, but the suggestion to ask Miss Wills, was adopted. Would she satisfy the «. uriosity of our reader —who is, of course, a lady. Now at last, it seemed, we would learn something definite. Tho problem assumes new shape, however, in view of a pronouncement on the subject by Miss Wills herself. She is sure her eyes are not brown or hazel; indeed, she is not sure what colour they are. To be more specific, in reply to the editor’s appeal for light on the subject, the champion writes a pleasant note, from which this paragraph is extracted: “I am not sure about the colour of my eyes. If I wear a blue dress, they are blue. They can become green, at times, and on grey days they are grey. So I will leave to you the problem of deciding what colour they are. I am sure they are not brown or hazel.”
