NEW BRIDGE OVER WAIHOU Tie new bridge over the Waihou, connecting Thames with the Hauraki Plains, is fast nearing completion, and yesterday morning the central (swinging) span was worked for the first time to let a vessel through—the s.s. Taniwha, bound for Paeroa. The swinging operation took 42 seconds. The Minister of Education, the Hon. A. A. Wright,, who is -paying a visit to the schools in the Thames district, paid a visit to the bridge yesterday accompanied by Mr, W. Bongard, Mayor. The span was put in operation, and the party expressed pleasure at the smooth working of the structure. Mr. Wright said he had no idea the bridge was so massive, and that he was much impressed with the enormous value it would be to the Plains. The bridge will be ready for traffic by May 1. The annual meeting of the Thames Golf Club was held on Tuesday evening, the president, Mr. E. J. Clendon, presiding over a good attendance. The annual report showed the club to have a membership of 70—37 men and 33 women. It was decided to obtain the services of Mr. J. Watt as coach for a fortnight in May. The trophies won last year are as follow: —Ladies’ championship, Mrs. H. Bush; men’s championship, E. J Clendori the senior, and W. B. Teasdale the junior; president’s cup, L. Griffin. Various other trophies and medals were won by Messrs. C. F. Scott, R. L. Dodd and E. J. Clendon. and Mesdames Bush (4), Price and Poulgrain, and Messrs. Boles (2) and Cameron. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. E. J. Clendon; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. Fisher; assistant secretary, Mr. A. E. L. Dodd; captain, Mr. W. H. Baker; match committee, Messrs. E. J. Clendon, W. H. Baker and A. Fisher; general’ committee, Messrs. G. L. Shaw, H. H. Marshall, W. B. Teasdale and Mesdames W. Watson, W. Price, Misses Maxted and Kidd; auditor, Mr. C. H. PoulThe Physical Training Football Club held its annual meeting on Monday evening. There was a good attendance of supporters and the opinion was expressed that there was every likelihood of the club being represented by an exceptionally strong fifteen during the coming season. Mr. J. Tonge, who presided, said that last season the club was runner-up in the senior championship, but its third and fourth Ijiteens won the cups in their respective class. The knockout cup was won by the senior team. The resignation of Mr. P. Trebilcock as secretary was received with general regret, and Mr. J. H. Scanlon was elected to fill the vacancy. Other officers were elected as follow: —President, Mr. W. C. Cossgrove; vicepresidents, Messrs. E. Brown, • M. Labarre, J. Kneebone, L. Gee, J. -cHwinger, A. Pearson, L. Pedrotti, and H. Johnston; delegates to union, Messrs. M. Phillips, C. Cameron, J. Tonge, P. Trebilcock, D. Edward, H. Donnelly, J. Scanlon, C. Hudson and A. Attwood.
