LOS ANGELES.—The annual report of the Board of Harbour Commissioners of Los Angeles makes very interesting reading, for it indicates in the clearest possible fashion the astonishing rate of development of one of the most thriving ports in the United States. Its site was first discovered in 1542, and then named Bahia de los Humos (Bay of Smokes), being altered about half a century later to Ensenada de San Andres, and again in the early seventeenth century to San Pedro. By this latter name it was known until 1910, when the city of Los Angeles itself, which is some 25 miles north-west of the harbour district, acquired San Pedro and also Wilmington, incorporating them both within its own boundaries. The port now consists of two distinct parts, the outer harbour, formerly known as San Pedro, and the inner harbour, or Wilmington, and these together have approximately 40 miles of waterfront, the channel from the outer harbour to the lower end of the quays being 400 feet wide, and between the wharves at San Pedro and East San San Pedro fully 1,000 feet wide. It then opens into a turning basin, 1,600 feet in diameter, opposite the West Basin. At the entrance the depth of water is 40 feet, lessening to 30 to 35 feet in the main channel, and 35 feet alongside the quays.
