CRICKET MARATHON
SIXTEEN IN 106 MINUTES! AUSTRALIANS AT GISBORNE HOME SIDE UP AGAINST IT Press Associatioii. GISBORNE, Tuesday. In spite of the fact that rain liad fallen practically every day for the past fortnight, it was possible to commence play in the Australia-Poverty Bay cricket match to-day. The wicket had been covered for three days, but was soft and slow, with the outfield dead. The Australians sent the home team in and painfully slow batting followed. Morton captured the first six wickets, which fell for 30 runs. J. Scollum batted 106 minutes for 1G runs, giving: a patient display of correct cricket. The only bright spot was the last-wicket stand, which added 20 runs in 23 minutes. Turbitt, a schoolboy, batted freely for 18 not out, glancing and cutting like a veteran. Rain fell at 3.30, and stumps were drawn for the day. Poverty Bay had then scored 75 for the loss of nine wickets in 153 minutes. Blackie and Morton bowled almost throughout, the latter sending down 2 3 overs and the former 18. Grimmett and Oldfield were omitted from the visitors’ team. There was a fair attendance, £BS being taken at the gates. Scores were: * POVERTY BAY First Innings
