PARTRIDGES COMING
BIRDS FOR MATAMATA ACCLIMATISATION EFFORT The first big attempt to bring partridges into New Zealand is being made by the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, and the first batch of the birds will arrive by the Remuera on Sunday. The society has ordered 800 birds, which will be caught in Hungary and shipped from England, at a cost of £650. The Remuera will bring 120, the lonic 200 and other ships the remainder. No word has been received about the health of the birds on the voyage. The first shipment will be liberated at Matamata as soon as possible. Tl4s district is closed to shooting this season, so that the birds should have time to become acclimatised before the guns are after them. Next season thej T will probably provide good sport, the partridge being much faster than the pheasant. An attempt was made some years ago to place about 50 birds here, but It failed. There have also been several small attempts in Canterbury and for one season there was partridge shooting in Ashburton. Most of the birds will be liberated at Matamata, but some of them will to closed properties at Taringamotu, Pukekawa and Clevedon.
