CUT OFF BY FLAMES

STORE STAFF’S ESCAPE FIRE IN MELBOURNE . B, Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Sunday. A fire broke out in an old portion of the large London Stores in Bourke Street. Extensive damage was caused on the lower floors. The rapid spread of the flames cut off the office staff of 12 men and women on the third floor. They all climbed to safety, however, along a parapet to a verandah. The fire apparently was caused by two of the employees playing with patent cigar-lighters in one of the rooms where there was a heap of rubbish.—A. and N.Z.
