SEVENTY-FOOT FALL j FATALITY IN GORGE (From Our Own Correspondent.) PAPAKURA, Sunday. A fatal motor accident occurred in the Hunua Gorge on Saturday evening about 7 o'clock, when a small Ford truck, driven by Mr. Richard * T ith, who was accompanied by his brother-in-law, Mr. Stuart J. Henrys, went over the bank and the latter was killed. The accident occurred at a bend about a mile past Guillard s quarrj, and Mr. Henrys was pinned under the truck. He received injuries to his head and shoulders and death was apparently instantaneous. There was a fall of about 70 feet, and the driver, Mr. Smith, was rendered unconscious for severa. hours. When he recovered he found his clothing was saturated with benaire from the broken tank of the truck, bu. he did not strike a match, ana ith the aid of his electric torch was able to climb up the bank and obtain us--5,4 Constable Holland and Hr. Page, of Papakura, were summoned, and proceeded to the scene of the accident. Mr. Henrys’s body was extricated, but death had occurred. „ . Mr. Henrys was ol years of ge, and had been farming in Happy Galley, Hunua, for six or seven years, rud was very popular in the district. He leaves a widow and two voting children. He was a son ot Mr. J. e*. Henrys, official racing handicapper. Seen by a Sun man to-day. Mr. Smith, wliose injuries were not very serious, describing the accident, said that when turning round a hairpin bend lie had a recollection of meeans a car going in the direction of Papa-, kura and this, he thought, was responsible for taking him too near to the edge, and loose metal made the position worse. After this, he sa.d, he remembered nothing until tie covered consciousness in the gorge. The truck became a total wreck. Mr. Henrys’s body was recovered with great difficulty. The funeral will take place at Hillsborough to-morrow.
