HURRIED EXITS

HOTEL AND POST OFFICE BURNED FIRE IN HAWKE’S BAY Press Association. NAPIER, Sunday. The destruction by fire of two very old wooden buildings at Puketapu, about nine miles from Napier, occurred in the early hours of this morning. The buildings were the Puketapu Hotel and the store and post office. The fire had its origin in the kitchen of the hotel. It rapidly spread from one building to another. Owing to the absence of water the spectators could do nothing to extinguish the flames. As the annual sports had been held on the previous day the hotel had more than the usual number of boarders. These escaped with practically nothing but their night attire. The hotel was owned by Mr. J. Vigor Brown and was insured for £l,lOO. The stock and furniture were insured for £650. The insurances on the shop are not known.
