“PRIMARY SCHOOLS ARE HAPPY HUNTING GROUND”

TEACHERS CHANGE RAPIDLY MINISTER SUGGESTS REMEDY The suggestion was made by the New Lynn School Committee to the Minister of Education this morning that many teachers make the primary schools a lappy hunting ground for better jobs. The question was raised when n deputation complained to Mr. Wright that many teachers were coming i<» the New Lynn School, remaining or, a few weeks, and then moving on to other and better jobs. The only solution which the Minister could see for this situation was the establishment of a system of teachers’ salaries wherein there was a fixed salary and a it tcher would remain in his jobs till he reached the maximum salary set for his status. Mr. A. T. Reimer mentioned that in 1927 there had been 23 changes in th» New Lynn School up to August 1. “Sometimes we are without a teacher at all. while they are getting a new staff for us.’’ he said. The Minister: The teachers are supposed to stay in the one position for at least two years before being eligible for transfer. Mr. Reimer: They sometimes stay only a few weeks. He quoted instances of quick changes. The Minister said he was at a loss to understand the frequent changes, because the Act had been altered cj- - peciallv to provide for less frequent changes. He outlined the only solution which he could see, but this would cost great deal of money, and he could not say whether it would be justified.
