PRINCESS AND TIVOLI
“THE LOVE MART” Beautiful Billie Dove lias a role that could hardly be surpassed for charm and effective dramatic appeal in “The Love Mart,” which is now being- shown at the Princess and Tivoli Theatres. The portrayals by Gilbert Roland and Noah Beery are equally effective. The story is laid in the early 19th century, in New Orleans and vicinity. This was a time when slave-running was at its height, because Congress had forbidden the importation of slaves into America. Antoinette Frobelle, a beautiful girl of aristocratic lineage, is accused of being an octoroon; and is sold at the auction block. Victor Jallot, a gentleman adventurer, buys and frees her. But she comes back because she loves him and, when proved white, they are reunited as man and wife. Pirates, slave-runners, slaves and Creole fashion-plates are among the picturesque figures in this brave tale of the old South. Gilbert Roland plays the role of Jallot and Noah Beery is a villainous, slave-running ship-master. Other fine characterisations are supplied by Emile Chautard, Armand Kaliz, Boris Karloff, Andre Lanoy and Raymond Turner. “Cheating Cheaters,” starring Kenneth Harlan and Betty Compson, is also being screened.
