Drapers' Conference

CASH-ORDER SYSTEM CONDEMNED SUMMER-TIME APPROVED Some aspects of the cash order system in business were detailed in an address by Mr. A. J. Hutchinson at the Drapers’ Conference yesterday. Mr. Hutchinson said that the system consisted of parasite companies selling at a high rate of interest, cash orders on established firms, which were charged commission or discount. The class of business, though in its infancy, was growing fast, and the effect of its rapid growth would be as serious as was the case in America. The conference did not take any action, though it was suggested that the public should be warned of the menace. It was decided to recommend to the Prime Minister, the Hon. J. G. Coates, that the general election be held not later than October, so as not to interfere with Christmas trading. A suggestion was also made that schools be asked to close a clear week before Christmas. The following remit was carried: That the Factories Act and the Shops and Offices Act be amended so that where a factory is run in conjunction with a shop, the statutory half-holiday shall be on the same day for each.” The federation decided to associate itself with the Associated Chambers of Commerce in taking steps to secure a reduction in the number of bank holidays. Another matter in which the conference associated itself with the Associated Chambers of Commerce was in pressing for a reduction in the bank rate of interest on overdrafts. The following council members were elected from country associations: North Island: Mr. P. J. H. White, New Plymouth, and Mr. G. Roach, Hastings. South Island: Mr. J. S. Brass, Southland, and Mr. Hurst, Nelson. SUMMER TIME SUCCESS A remit from the Wellington Association was passed urging the desirability of retaining the daylight saving measure on the statute book. A copy is being forwarded, to Mr. Sidey.
