IN THE MARKET PLACE
GOOD SUPPLIES FORWARD CHEAPER GRAPES Heavy supplies of both fruit and vegetables are coining forward to the City Marts at the moment. A healthy demand keeps the market in good tone. Tomato prices collapsed over the past few days owing to heavy arrivals from the Hutt. The bulk of the arrivals have been over-ripe, necessitating a quick sale. Golden Queen and late red peaches have been coming forward freely during the past week and moving out at prices well within the range of the average household purchaser. The season for this fruit is not expected to last many days longer. Heavy supplies of ripe pears are selling at easier values. Choice dessert apples are making higher rates than last week, but cookers and inferior grades are slow movers. Grapes are coming forward in greater quantities and sell at lower prices. Te Kauwhata grapes are now offering freely. The Tofua, with Island fruit, arrives on Monday next. In the field and garden produce section heavier supplies of most vegetables are coming forward. A large quantity of cabbages is being sent up from Masterton and districts in that vicinity. A big percentage of the arrivals is stale, and rather poor quality. Kumaras, pumpkins and swedes are well supplied, and making comparatively low prices. The egg market continues in strong tone, with the market moving upwards. A further advance has taken place over the past two or three days.
