Errors of Democracy
BRITAIN’S NEW FRANCHISE MAY INCREASE DIFFICULTIES By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 10.30 a.m. LONDON, Wed. “The Times,” in a leading article dealing with the Equal Franchise Bill, which has been circulated, giving the electorate as approximately 12,200,000 men and 14.500,000 women, says: “T/XPERIENCE shows that women do not rank themselves under the sex banner, but support parties in proportions similar to those of the whole electorate. However, the increased electorate must increase the already appreciable doubts and difficulties. It is most questionable whether representation of the people would be enlarged or restricted by an enlargement of the franchise, or w'hethe" i _;jresentative government worTu not be imperilled. Democracy knows its own mistakes, and an electorate of 25.000.000 voters requires a high degree of discernment to prevent errors and from them. Democracy has h olv begun the struggle with, and will perhaps suffer for, the latest consequences of development.” —Times.
