Louis Kossuth, the great Hungarian pdtriot, lived from 1802-1894. By means of journalistic and political propaganda he roused his compatriots, and in 1837 he was arrested by the Austrians for high treason and condemned to .four years’ imprisonment. Upon his release he continued the agitation, which broke into armed hostilities in 184 S. In April, 1849, after the Hungarians had gained many successes, he issued his declaration .of Hungarian independence, but owing to Russian intervention the Hungarian cause was lost and Kossuth became an outlaw. He escaped into Turkey and died an exile.
