RIFLE SHOOTING
TRENTHAM MATCH CONCLUDED INTERESTING TROPHY Press Association. TRENTHAM, To-day. A» early start was made in the continuation of the rifle shooting this morning. The weather was fine and bright with a left breeze. The Trentham match was concluded and the second stage of the army championship and progress match. It was noted yesterday that during the deliberate practice at 600yds there were 140 challenges of targets, and not a shot registered. Colonel Sin-clair-Burgess inspected the butts and complimented the Maori markers on their accuracy and machine-like working of the targets. Both army and cadet championships will be concluded to-day, when the belt holder in each division will be determined. The former is open to the New Zealand Division of the Navy, Permanent Military Forces and Air Force and territorials, the latter being cadets under 18 shears. Lance-Corporal Parker, of the Wellington Regiment, who secured the honour in 1927, is again well up in the army, and it is expected that Sergeant Hancox and Sergeant York, both of Christchurch, who are shooting well, will fight out the cadet honours. The second series event was similar to the first and many changes are probable, shooting conditions not being us tricky as yesterdaj". During the afternoon the Lewis gun match will be fired, which is open to teams of all units of the military and navy forces, also the anti-aircraft match and battle practice.
The most interesting trophy is that presented by the citizens of Stafford, England, to commemorate the kindly feelings toward members of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade stationed at Brockton Camp during the war. The trophy was subsequently presented by the Rifle Association for competition among infantry battalions.
