GREAT BAPTIST DEAD
INFLUENCE ON RELIGIOUS LIFE WORK FOR HIS CHURCH By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.30 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. The death is reported of the Rev. John Howard Shakespeare, aged 71, who raised £750,000 for the Baptist cause. Few Nonconformist ministers exerted greater influence on the religious life of Great Britain. He was intended for the civil service, but a nervous, trembling hand prevented his writing in the final examination. —A. and N.Z. The Rev. John Howard Shakespeare was born at Malton, in Yorkshire, in 1857. He was educated at University College, London, and the Regent’s Park Baptist College. From 1883 to 1898 he was minister at St. Mary’s Baptist Church; Norwich, and from 1898 to 1924 he was European secretary of the Baptist World Alliance. In 1916 he was chairman of the National Council of Evangelical Free Churches. He is an ex-chairman of the United Navy, Army and Air Force Board.
