SEARCHLIGHT CARNIVAL
TO-NIGHT’S PROGRAMME Exciting athletic contests and spectacular massed displays are some of the items on the programme of the inter-house girls’ searchlight carnival to be held in the Domain cricket ground to-night. There will also be running events, hurdling and organised games of every sort, including hoop team work, zigzag team in ball passing and leapfrog. Another exciting contest will be the relay races competed far by three girls from each team. As several of these girls hold fast sprint times close finishes are to be expected. In addition to the individual and team events there will be a special gymnastic and physical drill display by 350 girls, under the direction of Lieutenant Laffey, who had charge of the military pageant. Th© grand march and assembly will long be remembered as a triumph of organisation and display. All the events will be accompanied by music—inspiring music for the marching, and gay music for the organised games—supplied by the massed bands. Th© bands will meet at different points in the city, and march toward the Domain, arriving there about 7.45. During the evening the massed bands will play the following marches: “Invercargill,” “Great Little Army” and “Old Comrades,” under the baton of Lieutenant E. Tregilgas. The searchlights from Fort Cautley have been transferred to the Domain, as well as special floodlights brought from Wellington. These make the Domain as bright as day, and so illuminate the ground that every event will be clearly seen by the spectators. Full dress rehearsals have been held and all the girls ar© confident that to-night’s programme will be one of the most successful and spectacular ever presented to the public of Auckland. The carnival is an effort by the inter-house girls on behalf of th© Mayor’s Unemployment Fund.
