SYLOW’S REMARKABLE FEAT WAITEMATA CLUB'S GALA The remarkable feat of breaking both | the salt-water and fresh-water New Zealand records for the 220yds breaststroke was accomplished by N. K. Sylow (Ponsonby) at the carnival held by the Waitemata Swimming Club last evening. Sylow delighted those present with a great exhibition. J. Enwright (Waitemata) paced him. Sylow covered the first 100yds in 78s, and then went on to finish in 3.4 3-5. This was l-5s better than C. Heard’s fresh water record and 5 4-5 s better than C. Atkinson’s salt-water record. Sylow received a great ovation for his wonderful swim. The attendance was very disappointing, but those present were treated to a thoroughly enjoyable evening’s sport. R. Ashby won the second distance, 150yds of the Waitemata Junior Championship in convincing style. The men’s 440yds provided a good race, Aubin winning by a foot from Ashby with Cunnold third.

The Inter-House Championship Relay provided an exciting interlude, Milne and Choyce obtaining a popular victory. Once again Miss P. Robertson proved herself too good for all comers. She won the 100yds women’s handicap, in convincing style and also the junior girls’ handicap. The remainder of the events were well contested and many close finishes were witnessed. Results: 440Yds Club Handicap.—First heat: R. Ashby (Waitemata), 40s, 1: E. V. Cunnold (Waitemata), 10s, 2; D. S. Hyauiason (Grammar), 30s, 3. Time, 6.35. Second heat: R. Aubin (Kawhia), 355, 1; W. J. Stevens (Ponsonby), 30s, 2. Time, 6.11 3-5. Final: Aubin, 1; Ashby, 2; Cunnold, 3. Aubin won by a foot after a good race. Time, 6.16. IOOYds Women’s Handicap.—Miss P. Robertson (Parnell), 6s, 1; Miss D. Grant (Grammar), 2s, 2; Miss O. Harvey (Parnell), Bs, 3. Miss L. Coutts and Miss Robertson went into the second lap together, both swimming a wonderful race. The rest were closing up. Going down the final lap in a great burst of speed, Miss Robertson drew away, but Miss Coutts collapsed and had to be taken from the water. Miss Robertson won nicely. A great race. Won by inches. Time, 1.15. 150Yds Waitemata Junior Championship (second distance). —A. Ashby, 1; R. Pidgeon, 2. The only starters. Ashby led at the first length, with Pidgeon right at him. With the third lap the pair were on even terms, but Pidgeon dropped back again. Ashby went on to win by two yards. Time, 1.51. 133 1-3 Yds Inter-House Championship Relay.—Milne and Choyce, 1; George Court, 2; John Court, 3. A great battle. Milne and Choyce had a big lead at the start, but George Court came up well and the final lap saw a ding dong go for first place. The winner was a touch better than the second team. GRAMMAR CLUB GALA Preparations have been completed for the carnival to be given in the Tepid Baths on Tuesday evening next by the Grammar Swimming Club, and judging from the programme excellent sport should be witnessed. A feature o< the evening will be an exhibition backstroke event over 100yds by Miss E. Stockley, the Australasian champion. Sprint and distance events have a prominent place, while two challenge cup races will provide any amount of enjoyment. The various events are as follows: 50Yds Novice Handicap, 50Yds Grammar Schoolboys’ Handicap, IOOYds Women’s Handicap, 50Yds Junior Girls’ Handicap, 220Yds Women’s Handicap, Dual InterClub Challenge Cup Race, 50Yds Men’s Inter-Club Handicap, 440Yds Men’s Open Handicap, Grammar School Boys’ Relay Challenge Cup Race, IOOYds Open Breaststroke Handicap, IOOYds Backstroke exhibition by Miss E. Stockley. A water polo game and novelty events will also be included on the programme. Entries will close on Saturday next.
