FINDS COAT WITH £22
TEMPTATION TOO GREAT MAN STEALS FOR FAMILY (From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, To-day. A rather pitiful case was heard at the Court to-day, when a man was charged with the theft of £ 22. Detective Revell said the accused had found a coat containing a wallet, in the pocket of which was £22 10s, the property of Arthur Bullock. When accused of the theft, defendant admitted appropriating the money to the use of his family, who were in straitened circumstances. For the last 12 months he had been out of work and had been receiving charitable aid for his wife and family. The temptation had been too great when he found the money. Counsel appealed for leniency. Accused was a painter and had tried all manner of means to get work, without success. The money had been spent in food and clothing. The Magistrate said that no doubt accused was under the tress of temptation. The difficulty now was how to deal adequately with the offence, in view of the circumstances. The loss of the money was also severe on the other man.
Accused was admitted to probation for two years, restitution to be made during that period.
