MENTAL PATIENT KILLED

DEATH FOLLOWS ESCAPE RUN OVER BY TRAIN / (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. An escape from Tokanui Mental Hospital was effected by - Edward Hughes, aged about 50 years, early this morning, and subsequently his mutilated body was found by a boy oh the railway line at Te Mawhai, two miles from the hospital. It is believed that he tried to join the north-bound Main Trunk express, which does not stop at Te Mawhai. After the boy had discovered the mangled remains the north-bound Limited dashed along and further mangled the body. Identification was ascertained by deceased's shirt, which was of the institution pattern.

Deceased had been an inmate for several years, and was regarded as a mild case, with occasional aberration when he made determined efforts to escape
