Eighteen bodies have been recovered at Santos from the Monte Seri-at avalanche, which buried a hospital, 14 houses and killed 200 people. The rescuers are digging frantically to remove the earth and rocks to reach the others. Shifting earth is hindering the work. The landslide from the mountain, which stands in the centre of the city, tame down at dawn on Saturday.—A. N.Z. « 0 Santos, the greatest coffee port in the world, is situated about 200 miles south of Rio de Janeiro. A funicular railwav runs a frequent service to the summit o? Monte Serrat, where a magnificent view oi* the town, beaches, river and surroundings can be obtained. The city is well built, with stately streets and open parks, and has a number of notable edifice*.
